How to switch dog food
Balanced nutrition is the key to a healthy, happy dog
There are several reasons why changing your dog’s food may be well-advised, and lots of upsides to opting for a quality meal tailored to your dog’s needs. And here’s why

When should you consider changing your dog’s food?

From pup to adult
… or from adult to senior. Your dog’s life phases involve different requirements, which can be met by specially designed kibble.

Dull, dry coat
… or itching may be a sign that your dog is not getting the right nutrients from its diet.

Sensitive stomach?
... and loose stools, bloating or gas may be a sign that the kibble you’re serving is not as high-grade as it could be.

Low energy level
... or excess energy after meals may be a sign that the kibble or treats are causing blood sugar highs and lows.

Special requirements
Sterilised and castrated dogs often need dietary adjustments to prevent excess weight gain.

Low appetite
If your dog is failing to eat or constantly hungry.
Meals from puppy to senior
Still have some kibble left from your current dog food brand? Don’t worry – you can avoid digestive upset by gradually mixing in the new kibble over a short transitional period.
What benefits can I expect?
With the first bag of ESSENTIAL FOODS, a whole new lifestyle begins for your dog. Some of the benefits our customers experience include:

What should I choose?
Is grain-free better?
Grains are often used as a cheap source of carbohydrates in factory-made kibble. If your dog switches to a grain-free kibble like ESSENTIALS, you are likely to notice positive changes.

Quality ingredients
Quality makes a noticeable difference to a dog’s health and well-being. At ESSENTIALS we use fresh, high-quality ingredients. You’ll find fresh meat and fish as well as vegetables like sweet potatoes, peas, spinach, broccoli and also blueberries in our meals, but never fillers like soy and corn.
Choose the right variety
Go for a kibble designed for your dog’s needs (age, size, breed and lifestyle) We have meals for puppies, adult dogs, senior dogs, sterilised/castrated dogs and dogs with a highly active lifestyle – all bursting with tasty ingredients.

4 simple steps to switching your dog’s food
Switching to a new dog food may involve some digestive adjustment in any dog, whether puppy or adult. Follow our simple guide and get off to a great start with your new kibble.

First day
Mix a small amount of the new kibble into the old kibble. For a nice, slow start, try 25% new kibble to 75% of the old one.

First week
Make the transition over 4-7 days. By gradually getting your dog accustomed to the new kibble, you’ll be easing the digestive adjustment and avoiding tummy troubles.

First fortnight
Keep an eye on your dog’s digestion and general well-being. If your dog is thriving, you can gradually increase the amount of new kibble in the mix. If your dog’s stools are on the loose side, it may be a sign of overfeeding. Keep kibble meals to a minimum until the stools firm up.

Take heart, be patient
Every dog is unique. Spend the first couple of weeks working out the right portion size. Once your dog’s stools are normal and healthy, and your dog is full and contented after meals, you’ve found the right amount.

*Day 7: With ESSENTIALS you can reduce the serving size by 15% because of the high nutritional value.
